The Similarities between Pregnancy and Answered Prayers

There are several similarities between the waiting that a pregnant woman goes through before she delivers her baby and the waiting we may have to go through before our prayers are answered. These similarities teach us valuable lessons about how we should wait on God to answer our prayers and they include:

Wait for God

The first similarity is that answering prayers is a supernatural process and we cannot really rush God just as pregnancy is a natural process and we cannot really rush nature because even with IVF the live birth percentage is at best 65%. 

The lesson here is that after we have prayed and done our best, we just have to wait patiently for God’s perfect timing.

You Don't Have to Understand

The second similarity is that we don’t have to understand the intricacies of embryology to get pregnant just as we don’t have to understand how faith works for it to work. 

The lesson here is that we just have to combine our prayer with faith because we are told to Ask in faith (James 1:6) to get our prayers answered just as a sperm has to merge with an egg for a baby to born.

Problems May Pop Up

The third similarity is that sometimes problems pop up everywhere just after we have prayed just us a healthy woman suddenly develops persistent nausea and vomiting just after she conceives. 

The lesson here is that even if our situation worsens just after we pray over it, we should persevere believing that all will end well just like a pregnant woman perseveres through the morning sickness and swollen legs believing she will soon hold her healthy, bouncing baby in her arms. 

Therefore, wait expectantly and do not abort your prayers by doubting God since a skeptic should not suppose that they will receive anything from the Lord. (James 1:6-8)

The Answer Can Come In Stages

The fourth similarity between pregnancy and waiting for our prayers to be answered is that the initial positive signs of our answered prayers may not resemble what we have been praying for just like a pregnant woman’s bulging belly does not resemble the tiny tot she will deliver. 

The lesson here is that we should view these positive signs as proof that our answer is on the way and rejoice even if what we see does not resemble what we are praying for. 

Therefore, celebrate when you receive your first low-paying, temporary job and view it as a sign that your prayer request of being financially free is on the way.

Deliverance Can Come In Stages

Labor Spiritually

The fifth similarity is that we may have to do the really hard spiritual labor just before the answer to our prayers materializes just like a pregnant woman has to labor physically really hard in the labor ward just before her baby is born. 

The lesson here is that we have to persist in prayer and even fasting until we get our breakthrough and our answer materializes. 

Learn from Daniel who persisted in prayer and fasting for 21 days until the Angel who was bearing the answer to his prayers fought with Angel Michael until they defeated the evil spiritual powers over Persia that did not want Daniel to receive the answer to his prayers. (Daniel 10)

Push Through Pain

The sixth similarity is that we may have to push through much pain to get the job done just as a pregnant woman has to push through much pain to deliver her baby. 

Therefore, push through pain, pennilessness, and all other problems to do the physical work you need to get done to ensure you receive the answer to your prayers even if it means working overnight and on an empty stomach until the answer to your prayers materializes physically.
