A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1)
We can see a great example of this when David set out with 400 armed men to kill all the men in Nabal's household because his anger had been stirred by Nabal's words.
However, Nabal's wife Abigail set out resolve the conflict and her gentle words turned away David's wrath from her family for he said, "Blessed is the God of Israel who has sent you to meet me!
Blessed is your advice and blessed are you!
You have prevented me from avenging myself because if you had not hurried to meet me, there would not have been any men left in Nabal's house by morning." (1 Samuel 25:2-38)
Therefore use your tongue to speak gentle words that pacify volatile situations.
