How to Put on the Armor of God

To put on the armor of God you have to do put on the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the Gospel and the helmet of salvation. You also have to take the shield of faith and the sword of the spirit.

What is the Belt of Truth?

The Bible tells us Stand therefore having girded your waist with truth (Ephesians 6:14) 

This spiritual belt of truth is an analogy of the physical belt that the soldier used to tie around his waist to hold the other pieces of his armor in place.

Being truthful therefore helps the other pieces of your spiritual armor do the job they are supposed to do effectively.

Therefore put on the belt of truth by being truthful in your dealings.

What is the Breastplate of Righteousness?

The Bible tells us Having put on the breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14) 

This spiritual breastplate of righteousness is an analogy of the physical breastplate that the soldier used to wear on his chest. Since it enabled him to face the enemy confidently, the spiritual one will also help you face your enemy boldly since The righteous are as bold as a lion.(Proverbs 28:1)  

Therefore put on the breastplate of righteousness by doing the right thing in the sight of God all the time.  

What are the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace?

The Bible tells us Having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15) 

These spiritual shoes of the Gospel are an analogy of the physical shoes that the soldier used to wear on his feet to protect them and enable him to fight in different types of terrain. The spiritual shoes will also equip you to battle effectively in different types of situations since All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and it is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction and for instruction in righteousness so that the man of God may be complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) 

Therefore, put on the shoes of the gospel of peace by reading your Bible.

What is the Shield of Faith?

The Bible tells us Above all take the shield of faith with which you will be quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one (Ephesians 6:16) 

This spiritual shield of faith is an analogy of the physical shield that the soldier held in his hands to protect him from the darts fired by his enemy which enabled him to face his enemy fearlessly. The spiritual shield will also enable you to do the same since we are told that it is capable of extinguishing all the darts the enemy may fire at you.

Therefore take your shield of faith by believing God and the Bible.

What is the Helmet of Salvation?

The Bible tells us And put on the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17) 

This spiritual helmet of salvation is an analogy of the helmet that the soldier wore on his head to protect it and thus enable him to make correct decisions. The spiritual helmet will also enable you to do the same.

Therefore put on your helmet of salvation by saying with your mouth that "Jesus is Lord" and believing in your heart that when He died for our sins, God raised Him from the dead and you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)  

What is the Sword of the Spirit?

The Bible tells us And take the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17)  

This spiritual sword is an analogy of the physical sword that the soldier carried to attack the enemy and fight to win his battles. The spiritual sword will also enable you to do the same.

Therefore, take the sword of the spirit by speaking Bible verses that pertain to your situation. 

Benefits of Putting on the Armor of God

Putting on the armor of God enables you to resist the devil and his schemes for it is written, "Put on the whole armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the tricks of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11)

This spiritual armor enables you to do this because the devil fights you by using spiritual forces in the form of Principalities, powers, rules of the darkness of this age and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12) 

Since you cannot resist or fight these forces physically with your flesh and blood, you have to deal with them by using the spiritual weapons which make up the armor of God and that is why we are told, Take up the whole armor of God so that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all that you can do, to continue standing. (Ephesians 6:13)


Note that to be able withstand or resist the devil you must already have put on the armor of God since we are told, "Stand therefore, having girded your waist ... having put on the breastplate ... having shod your feet ... having taken the shield of faith ... having taken the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit while always praying" (Ephesians 6:14-18) Therefore never dare to stand against the devil before you have put on the whole armor of God.
