Refuse to Be a Victim
Have terrible things
happened to you?
If they have,
understand that you can be a victor instead of being a victim of your
circumstances by learning from people in the Bible who experienced terrible
things in their lives and triumphed over their situations.
Refuse To Be A Victim Like Tamar
Tamar is one of the
people who experienced many bad things in
her life (Genesis 38) but she refused to accept a victim mentality. This is
because her first husband Er was wicked and God killed him. According to the
custom of that time, if a man died without a child, his brother was to marry
his wife and bear children to perpetuate his name.
Er's brother Onan therefore
became Tamar’s second husband but instead of helping her get children, he
emitted to the ground. God did not like this act and killed him.
Her father-in-law Judah then
sent Tamar back to her father's house to remain a widow until his third son
Shelah had matured enough to marry her though he had no intention of fulfilling
his promise because he did not want him to die like his brothers.
Tamar inspite of being
sent back to her father’s house as a childless widow of two husbands, refused
to a victim mentality.
We know this from the fact that
when she saw that Shelah had grown up and she had not been given to him as
wife, she took matters in her own hands and ended up being the mother of twins
called Perez and Zerah. (Genesis 38:29-30)
Tamar was therefore able to
change herself from a victim of her circumstances (two time widow
with no children sent back to her father's house) to a victor over her
circumstances (mother of twins mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus. (Matthew
1) Therefore
regardless of what has happened to you, refuse to accept a victim mentality and a victim's fate.
Refuse To Be A Victim Like Joseph
Joseph also experienced terrible things in his life because his
brothers sold him into slavery and then his slave master's wife falsely accused
him of attempted rape and he was thrown into prison.
However even when he was in prison, we know that he did not
have a victim mentality because when he found Pharaoh's butler and baker sad,
he asked them the cause of their distress and interpreted their dreams for
them. (Genesis 40:6-8)
A person with a victim mentality would have had a defeated
attitude and would not have bothered to help anyone. Therefore regardless of the
bad things that people have done at you, refuse to accept a victim mentality, a victim’s behavior and a victim's
fate.
Refuse To Be A Victim Like The Woman With The
Issue Of Blood
The woman with the issue of
blood also Suffered many things (Mark 5:26) in her life but she
refused to accept a victim mentality. For starters she had a bleeding problem
for 12 years. This disease made her Suffer many things from many
doctors (Mark 5:26) presumably as they tried to treat her.
Then this disease made her
broke as she spent all she had and yet it continued to worsen instead of
getting better.
Her financial situation could
by itself have depressed her and made her accept a victim mentality since it
potentially meant she could not consult any more doctors for her worsening
condition but she did not let it bring her down.
In addition to the financial
issues arising from her bleeding issue, this woman also had social issues
arising from the same bleeding issue because it made her a social outcast.
Once, again she did not let these problems make her accept a sick role
or victim mentality.
We know this because in spite
of all her issues, when she heard about Jesus, she decided to come to Him and
she was able to change herself from a victim of her circumstances (broke
woman with an incurable disease) to a victor over her circumstances (woman
miraculously healed by Jesus from a 12 year condition ).
Therefore regardless of all the physical, mental, spiritual, social or financial conditions you are
suffering from, refuse to accept a victim mentality
and a victim's fate.
Instead of accepting to be a
victim, emulate these three victors and do the following things so that you can
also become a victor of your circumstances:
Have Faith in Jesus
The woman with the issue of
blood was able to change from a victim to a victor because she had faith that
Jesus could help her. We know this because Jesus told her Your faith has
made you well. (Mark 5:34)
Therefore have faith in Jesus the
Son of God especially if you are dealing with issues that do not have an
earthly solution by simply believing that He can change your situation for the
better because With God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)
***
Speak Your Faith
This woman with the issue of
blood spoke what she believed because she said to herself, "If only I
touch His garments, I shall be made well." (Mark 5:28)
Therefore speak the positive
things you are believing will happen to your situation since The tongue has
the power of death and life (Proverbs 18:21).
For the best results, confess
Bible verses since The sword of the
spirit … is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:17)
For example, if terrible things
have happened to your health you can confess He sent His word and healed me. (Adapted Psalm 107:20)
If terrible things have
happened to your marriage you can confess A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his
wife and the two shall become one flesh. (Ephesians 5:31)
If terrible things have
happened to your children you can confess The Lord will pour His Spirit on my descendants and His
blessings on my offspring. (Adapted Isaiah 44:3)
If terrible things have
happened to your finances you can confess I shall lend to many nations but I shall not borrow. (Adapted Deuteronomy 28:12)
If terrible things have
happened to your ministry you can confess Thanks be to God who always leads me to triumph in Christ and
through me diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. (Adapted 2 Corinthians 2:14)
If terrible things have happened
to your business you can confess In all labor there is profit. (Proverbs 14:23)
If terrible things have
happened to your job you can confess Promotion comes neither from the east nor from the west nor
from the south. Because God is the Judge: He puts down one and exalts
another. (Psalm
75:6-7)

Renew your Mind
The
Bible tells us, Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Romans 12:2) Therefore, transform or change
yourself from a victim to a victor by renewing your mind with the Word of God.
To do this, go through your
Bible and find Victor Scriptures that you can meditate on and confess. Perfect
examples of these Victor Scriptures include:
God is perfecting
that which concerns me. (Psalm 138:8)
I am confident
that He who has begun a good work in me will complete it. (Philippians 1:6)
I can do all things through
Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians
4:13)
In all these things I am more than a conqueror through Jesus
Christ who loves me. (Romans 8:37)
With God all things are
possible. (Matthew 19:26)
Therefore every time a
"Victim Thought" like “I will never succeed” enters your mind, cancel
it by reminding yourself of a "Victor Scripture" like In all
these things I am more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ who loves
me. (Romans 8:37)
***
Discern God’s Will
The Bible tells us, Do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind so that you can discern what is the
good, acceptable and perfect will of God (Romans
12:2)
Therefore,
instead of conforming and accepting to be a victim because of your current
situation, change yourself to be a victor by meditating on God’s Word so that
you can know what He would like you to do for your situation.
So after
meditating on your "Victor Scriptures"
pray and ask God to reveal to you what you should do to change your situation
for the better.
***
Do Something Physical
The woman with issues did
something physical by going to Jesus and touching the hem of His garment.
Joseph did something physical
by working well in the prison and using his gift of dream interpretation to
help others.
Therefore instead of wallowing
in self-defeating pity parties, do something physical that shows you believe that
your situation will change for the better since Faith without works is dead.
(James 2:26)
For example, if you are
unemployed, you can send out other job applications even if you have applied to
hundreds of jobs before. And, as you wait for the replies, begin using your
gifts and talents to make some money and help other members of your society.

I love this "Refuse to be a victim" philosophy! Why is it so appealing for some people to play martyr? I can't figure that one out? Is sreceiving sympathy really so appealing?
ReplyDeleteRenewing our mind is so essential to creating a new mindset. God never desires for us to live as victims, and I appreciate this call to courage and freedom.
