Free Christian Counseling: How To Calm Anxiety with Bible Verses

Dear Christian Counselor
Kindly assist me on how to handle anxiety. I am currently on medication because I am not able to hold my emotions since I lost my brother in 2016. Every time, I remember him, I get sick.

Please advice me on how to forget about him because, I seriously want to stop medication.

Dear Friend in Christ
I suggest that you take the following steps to calm anxiety:

1. Pray
Pray whenever you begin to feel anxious because the Bible tells us, Do not be anxious about anything. In every situation combine prayer and supplication with thanksgiving as you make your requests known to God. (Philippians 4:6)

This means that you have to humbly and earnestly ask God to heal the anxiety and thank Him for the blessings He has already bestowed on you and you will have peace of mind for He promises us that if we do this The peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7)

As you pray earnestly, make your anti-anxiety prayers more powerful by praying Bible verses since The Word of God is the sword of the spirit (Ephesians 6:17)

For example you can pray,
1. Heavenly Father I thank you because I am alive and I ask You in the name of Jesus to help me stop being anxious when I think about my brother. I present my heart, mind and emotions to You and I thank You for the healing and peace that You are going to give me. (Philippians 4:6)

2. Heavenly Father I thank You because I am alive and I ask You in the name of Jesus to heal me of anxiety because I know that You are the God of all flesh and there is nothing that is too hard for You. (Jeremiah 32:7)

3. Heavenly Father I thank You because I am alive and I ask You in the name of Jesus to comfort me and give me joy because it is written that In the multitude of anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul. (Psalm 94:19)

Make it a point to therefore pray for yourself each day because you are to be Casting all your cares on Him because He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7)

2. Believe
Decide to have faith that God can heal the emotional wounds that were left after your brother death because the Bible tells us that He healeth the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)

Therefore regardless of how many years anxiety has troubled you, simply decide to believe that God can heal your heart, mind and body because With God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)

Get Saved
Jesus tells us, Come to Me all of you who labor and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

Therefore because you are heavily burdened by these anxious thoughts, come to Jesus.

To do this, say with your mouth that "Jesus is Lord" and believe in your heart that when He died for our sins, God raised Him from the dead and you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)

Jesus also tells us, Take up My yoke and learn from Me because I am gentle and humble and you will find rest for your souls for My yoke is easy and My burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)

So after coming to Jesus by getting saved, you have to take up His yoke which means that you have to live your life according to the instructions in the Bible and you will find rest for your soul.

To do this obey the 10 commandments and other instructions laid out in the Bible. To learn more read How to Workout Your Salvation.

Visualize

Combine your Christian meditation with visualization to make it more effective.

For example as you meditate on anxiety relieving Bible verses like You will keep me in perfect peace because my mind is stayed on You and I trust in You (Adapted Isaiah 26:3) see yourself with your mind's eye in a place where you feel very peaceful. This could be while lying on a beautiful beach or while watching a beautiful sunset.

I leave you with peace. My peace I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled. Do not let it be afraid. (John 14:27)

Breathe
Whenever the thoughts that cause anxiety enter your mind, as you meditate on anxiety relieving Scriptures and visualize yourself in  your peaceful place, take a deep breath through your nose until your abdomen rises, hold your breath for a few moments and then exhale completely through your mouth.

Repeat this deep breathing several times as you focus your mind on calming Scriptures and  you will begin to feel the anxiety reducing.

Affirm
Since Death and life are in the power of the tongue and they that love it shall eat its fruit (Proverbs 18:21) make it a point to confess anti-anxiety Bible verses whenever the thoughts that cause anxiety cross your mind.

As you do so, ensure that you proclaim the Bible verses in the present tense. For example you can say the following Christian affirmations to fight anxiety each morning and evening:
I sought the Lord and He heard me and He delivered me. (Psalm  34:4)

God is keeping me in perfect peace because my mind is stayed on Him and I trust in Him

The Lord of peace Himself is always giving me peace in every way(Adapted 2 Thessalonians 3:16)

The Lord is giving strength to me. The Lord is blessing me with peace. (Adapted Psalm 29:11)

Lord You are establishing peace for me(Adapted Isaiah 26:12)

God has sent His word and healed me(Adapted Psalm 107:20)

God is strengthening me. Yes, He is helping me and upholding me with His righteous right hand. (Adapted Isaiah 41:10)

I have cast all my cares on God because He cares for me(Adapted 1 Peter 5:7)

I have cast my burdens on the Lord and He shall sustain me. (Adapted Psalm 55:22)

Socialize
In addition to this create time to spend with friends who cheer you up because Anxiety in the heart of a person causes depression but a good word makes it glad.  (Proverbs 12:25)
