Step 3
Bible Verses to Ponder
Pray
without ceasing. (1
Thessalonians 5:17)
Action Plan
Commit
to praying each day until you break free from the addictive behavior and
continue praying to ensure you remain free for the rest of your life.
If
you have never done it, prayer is simply talking to God by telling Him your
problems, asking Him for His help and thanking Him for the blessings in your
life.
Ensure
that as you pray you believe that God can help you overcome the addiction
because Jesus repeatedly told people in the Bible who were healed, “Your
faith has made you well.” For example He said it to Bartimaeus in Mark
10:52, to the leper in Luke 17:19 and to the woman with the bleeding disorder
in Mark 5:34.
This
woman had suffered for 12 years from her disease and she had become broke
because of moving from specialist to specialist seeking treatment. However, she
kept her faith alive by believing that Jesus could heal her even if many
specialists had failed.
Therefore
continue believing that Jesus can heal you regardless of how long you have
suffered with the addiction and regardless of the number of addiction treatment
specialists you have seen in the numerous programs you have attended.
Believing
that God can help you can overcome the addiction is also how you hold up the
shield of faith which is the Christian spiritual warfare weapon that is able to
put off all the fiery darts fired by the enemy into your life. (Ephesians
6:14-17) These darts fired by the enemy might include doubts that you can
free of this addictive behavior.
Prayers
that you can say to help you overcome the addiction include:
1.
Father God I ask You in the name of Jesus to strengthen me so that I will not be overcome by the urge to
engage in the addictive behavior. Help me so that I can replace it with a good
habit. (Adapted
Romans 12:21)
2.
Father God I ask You in the name of Jesus to help me so that I may always see
the way of escape when I am tempted to engage
in the addictive behavior. Strengthen me so that when I see it I can take it
and overcome the temptation. (Adapted 1
Corinthians 10:13)
3. Father God I ask You in the name of Jesus to Direct my steps by Your word and not to let this addictive behavior dominate my life. (Adapted Psalm 119:133)

Write Down Your Reasons
Write
down all the reasons why you want to stop engaging in the addictive behavior at
the back of your Stop Addiction Diary. This is very important because your
personal convictions can strengthen your willpower and help you resist the
temptation of engaging in the addictive behavior.
In
addition reduce the number of times you engage in the addictive behavior by
1/4. For example if you used to engage in it 12 times a week at the beginning
of this program, begin engaging in it 9 times a week from now on.
